Description

This volume comes third in a series of publications of the Institute of Modern Greek Studies entitled “Greek Language: Synchrony and Diachrony”, which covers the following topics:

(a) etymology of the Greek language,

(b) language contact, and

(c) koine-related problems.

It includes 16 papers, most of which were presented at the “1st International Conference on Koine, koines and the formation of Standard Modern Greek”, organized by the Institute of Modern Greek Studies at AUTh Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation, Thessaloniki, on November 3–4, 2017. The aim of the conference was to examine problems related to koine formation both in Greece and in other Balkan countries, thus prompting us also to revisit the relevant theoretical problems and reconsider aspects of the Hellenistic Koine.

In line with the three themes of the Conference, the volume is divided in three parts: the first one includes three papers on the Hellenistic Koine, the second one seven papers on koines in general, and the third one six papers on Standard Modern Greek (SMG) and its formation.

This bilingual edition was edited by Chr. Tzitzilis, Professor Emeritus at A.U.Th., and G. Papanastassiou, Professor at A.U.Th.

The volume is dedicated to the memory of the prominent Greek linguist Michalis Setatos, Professor Emeritus of AUTh and member of the Institute’s Board of Directors for 44 years, who passed away on July 3, 2017.
