This book could be considered the last volume (9th) of M. Triandaphyllidis’ Collected Works, as it makes available the text and the (related) archive material found in the remainder of his works. Triandaphyllidis’ interest in Modern Greek family names dates back to the time he was a university student and continues throughout his life. He intended to write a study on family names, and had even announced its publication.

The study discusses the derivation and the meaning of Modern Greek family names in a systematic and thorough way. It examines both the mechanisms leading up to the formation of a wide variety of family names and a great number of names deriving either from an ancestor’s first name or from one’s place of origin, their profession, or their nickname. The book also contains an extensive index. This work fills a major gap in the field of Modern Greek onomastics. It is a scientific study, but can also be read with great interest by anyone.
